Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase III Program
Northern Maine Medical Center's (NMMC's)
Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase III - "Health Maintenance
Program" is conducted on an outpatient basis
in a monitored environment with exercise specialists
and nurses present at all sessions. The "Health
Maintenance Program" is a division of Northern Maine
Medical Center's Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation
Program and is conducted at the NMMC Wellness Center
(Fort Kent) and at the Acadia Family Health Center
(AFHC) in Madawaska. Education about heart disease
is considered to be a primary goal of maintenance.
Classes are offered at Northern Maine Medical Center
to include topics such as stress, risk management,
medications and diet.
Admissions
Eligible candidates for the "Health Maintenance
Program" include those who . . .
- have stable angina or chest pain
- have had coronary heart bypass surgery at least
60 days prior to joining the program
- have had a heart attack at least 90 days prior
to joining the program
- have had angioplasty
- have implanted defibrillators/pacemakers
- are at high risk for heart disease with two
or more current risk factors
- have recently completed an outpatient exercise
program in a hospital
A medical referral form must be filled out by your
physician and submitted to Northern Maine Medical
Center's Cardiac Rehabilitation for program
enrollment.
Support Comes in Many Ways
The risk factors for heart disease are conditions
and habits that tend to speed the development of artherosclerosis.
Lack of exercise is a major risk factor for heart
disease, but there are several risk factors for a
heart attack that you can control.
They are as follows:
- high blood pressure
- high blood cholesterol
- cigarette/tobacco smoke
- physical inactivity
- diabetes
- negative responses to stress and certain drugs

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase III Program
We, at Northern Maine Medical Center, realize how
expensive health care can be. Having heart disease
can be costly. NMMC's Cardiac Fund has created a scholarship
program to help those who otherwise could not afford
to go to a Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.
