NMMC’s State of the Art Endless Pool
Fort Kent – Aquatic therapy is the newest service being offered to area residents of Northern Aroostook County, through the use of Northern Maine Medical Center’s Endless Pool.
What is an endless pool? One of the nicest features of the 7’x14’ foot therapeutic pool, (which is a beautiful 90 degrees or warmer) is the “current” that is available to provide resistance to exercise. The warm water in the pool increases blood flow and also provides buoyancy so it makes the patient feel lighter in the pool, allowing for less pain. Swimming is an excellent exercise, and can have multiple benefits for the well being of patients. At full capacity, the endless pool is designed for a maximum of 5 people
The purpose of aquatic therapy is to use the therapeutic effects of the warm water as a medium to enhance the rehab of patients with a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders. Water helps to support the body, reduce joint stress, and provide resistance and assistance to movement.

Participating patients will benefit from the endless pool, because sometimes patients are in too much pain and can not complete therapy on land, therefore the pool will allow for a great medium to perform exercises that they could otherwise not perform.
The new Endless Pool at NMMC, is the only therapeutic pool of it’s kind in Northern Maine.

Future goals of the Endless Pool therapy program include: groups for patients dealing with Fibromyalgia and/or Arthritis. Other programs will be developed once the need is identified.

Ask your doctor if aquatic therapy could help you. If you would benefit from our service, please remember that a referral is needed to begin the therapy.
