Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Program

It is the mission of Northern Maine Medical Center’s swing -bed program to assist individuals to reach a higher level of wellness by providing skilled and/or restorative services including physical, occupational, speech therapy, medical and nursing supervision, and other supportive services in a caring environment, as indicated by individual needs.

Patients meeting skilled nursing criteria, but no longer needing acute care, are eligible for admission to our swing bed unit. Swing-bed programs are intended to treat short term rehabilitation-oriented medical conditions. During your stay on the swing bed unit, you will work with the physicians, the therapy department, and nursing staff to get you back to your baseline level of functioning and maximize your independence. The goal of the swing bed unit is to transition the patient to a permanent living situation as soon as possible. The treatment team will assure the patient receives appropriate daily skilled nursing services, provide specialized rehabilitative services needed by patients to improve and maintain the highest possible level of functioning and will also ensure patients have a planned program of continuing care after discharge that promotes their highest level of functioning.
