Northern Maine Medical Center and its laboratory have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. NMMC and the hospital laboratory have earned national accreditation from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals since 1962. The accreditation status keeps us aligned with our mission to provide outstanding care. It also benefits us by keeping our staff and our organization on top of the latest trends in health care quality.
Hospitals participating in The Joint Commission’s accreditation process receive expert assistance and support from individual account executives and standards implementation and patient safety experts. Joint Commission-certified surveyors provide a rigorous evaluation of the hospital’s patient care processes and helpful expert advice on how to The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. NMMC was granted accreditation for all services surveyed under the applicable manual(s):
- Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Laboratory and Point-of-Care Testing
- Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Critical Access Hospitals
They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

Recognition from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Northern Maine Medical Center was informed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that it had earned a 5-star recognition for patient experience and a 3-star overall rating for performance in clinical quality measures.
Becker’s Healthcare Top 100 Hospitals in America
Northern Maine Medical Center has been selected as a Top 100 Hospital in America in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.
The Becker’s editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on rankings and awards from such organizations as iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades, CareChex, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Leapfrog Group. Gold Star Standards of Excellence Platinum Recognition
Northern Maine Medical Center has received Platinum Recognition by the Gold Star Standards of Excellence in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
The Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognizes achievement in compliance to the ten best practice Gold Star Standards defined by the Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network. Some of the best practices included in the ten standards are: reducing tobacco use and creating tobacco-free areas for patients, employees and visitors through evidence-based strategies; providing training, policies, and assistance to quit and must not support or accept any contributions from tobacco companies.
